Our accommodation is perched on the hillside overlooking the Mngazi River mouth, with panoramic views of the scenic splendour of the Wild Coast. The 68 rooms are nestled amongst kaleidoscopic fauna and flora that only the real heart of Pondoland can offer.

Our guests can choose from 6 categories of bungalows, all of which are individually furnished & tastefully decorated.

Dining at Umngazi

Guests can look forward to fresh, healthy meals each day, beautifully laid out in Umngazi’s relaxed dining space. The outside dining deck, which overlooks the swimming pool with serene river views beyond, is an idyllic spot for al fresco dining.

Basil’s Bar overlooks the riverfront and is a central buzz point for the hotel. Quench your thirst with a signature cocktail or ice-cold beer on the deck, and you’ll fully appreciate the allure of this sociable and idyllic location.

Celebrate a special occasion with an exclusive evening in the Green Door Wine Cellar. The cosy, and intimate setting offers a leisurely tasting and special dining experience.

The Riverside Gazebo is an intimate dining venue set on stilts above the river with wraparound windows for captivating panoramic views. Lanterns and soft lighting set the tone for a beautifully tranquil dining experience.

The Saturday Seafood evenings are a highlight at Umngazi, showcasing coastal cuisine and vibrant Pondo culture. A succulent combination of fish, shellfish, home-baked breads, fresh salads, hearty soups and carvery are prepared to perfection and set to a rhythmic cultural performance.

Activities

There is something for everyone at Umngazi, where you can keep as busy or as sedentary as you choose.  For the active, there are a variety of hikes and walks, kayaking, SUP boarding, a tennis court and a gym available.  For those who prefer a gentler approach, there are plenty pool and riverside loungers available to bask in the sun, or you can curl up on a cozy couch in the stylish lounge area with a delicious cappuccino and a book from the library. 

The entertainment team at the hotel love having a hotel full of children to keep them happy, entertained and active.  The Creative Corner is a wonderland for the Under 8’s with a variety of fun activities to keep them busy. Nannies are available for families looking for a little bit of extra help while visiting, allowing the adults to also take time out together.

Getting here

Umngazi Hotel & Spa is accessible by road.  Please check the website for directions and detour suggestions.  Weekly fly-in packages from Virginia airport in Durban to Port St John’s are available (Friday to Friday).  SA Airlink offers direct flights from Johannesburg to Mthatha Airport.  Please enquire with reservations about transfer companies to arrange the 90km drive from Mthatha to Umngazi Hotel & Spa.
